Abacus – Australian Mutuals warmly congratulates Traditional Credit Union (TCU) for winning a prestigious Indigenous Governance Award.

TCU, Australia’s only Aboriginal-owned banking institution, today won the 2008 Reconciliation Australia Indigenous Governance Award for an organisation established for more than 10 years.

Darwin-based TCU provides banking services to approximately 14,000 members in remote Aboriginal communities across the Top End of the NT.

Abacus is the industry body for credit unions, building societies and friendly societies and speaks for 170 organisations that have more than $70 billion in assets under management and provide services to more than 6 million Australians.

“TCU’s members are some of the most disadvantaged people in Australia,” said Abacus CEO Louise Petschler. “TCU does a fantastic job in providing financial services and promoting financial literacy to its members. This award confirms TCU’s performance as a very well run, strongly committed credit union. We are extremely proud of TCU and its achievement today.”
