Abacus – Australian Mutuals congratulates Victorian-based credit union, mecu, on winning the ‘Best New Entrant’ award in the 5th Australian New Zealand Corporate Responsibility Index (CRI).

“This is well-deserved public recognition of mecu’s strong commitment to social and environmental responsibility,” Abacus chief executive officer, Louise Petschler said.

mecu is the second credit union to win the Best New Entrant award. South Australian-based Savings & Loans Credit Union took the award in 2006.

The CRI measures companies’ systems to address issues including community investment, biodiversity, climate change, waste and resource management, occupational health and safety and workplace diversity and engagement.

“mecu has been recognised for ensuring that social and environmental considerations are integrated into every aspect of its business – as well as offering ‘green’ and socially responsible products to consumers,” Ms Petschler said.

“Savings & Loans’ is focused on increasing the diversity of its workforce, promoting ‘green’ products, and encouraging staff to become involved in environmental and community-building volunteering.

“External recognition such as these awards showcases the great work that credit unions and mutual building societies do every day in their communities.”
