Credit unions and mutual building societies have this message for Westpac customers: “We won’t treat you like monkeys.”

Commenting on Westpac’s “Bananas” explanation of its 45 basis point rate rise, Abacus – Australian Mutuals CEO Louise Petschler said, “Customers come before profit at credit unions and mutual building societies because our customers are our owners.”

“Australians who are tired of their bank should vote with their feet and switch to a credit union or mutual building society” said Ms Petschler.

“Credit unions and mutual building societies have home loan rates that are on average lower than the lowest of the four major banks, according to data from independent rates comparison company Canstar Cannex,” Petschler said.

“According to Canstar Cannex data today, average standard variable home loan rates at credit unions and building societies are up to .59% cheaper than the major banks.

“Credit unions and mutual building societies also have excellent personal loan and credit card rates and competitive term deposits rates.

“Credit unions and mutual building societies strongly and consistently outperform the major banks in customer satisfaction surveys.

“There’s never been a better time to switch your home loan to a credit union or mutual building society. You’ll be rewarded with outstanding service and save money too,” said Ms Petschler.

“Check out the new Abacus website to find a credit union or mutual building society that suits you, at www.abacus.org.au” Petschler said.
